Contamination of air and water is greatly reduced when food is sold locally and grown ecologically. When you choose to buy produce from the Old Town Farmers Market, you reduce the amount of toxins that we breathe and drink. See you at the market!

Word of the day: “Locavore”
Definition: Someone who primarily eats local food that is commonly produced within a radius of 100 miles or less.
The term locavore became an official word in 2007 and since the year is now 2008, I expect it’s about time we learn to use it in common day speech.
For example: ‘No thanks I'll pass on the BoBerry biscuits, I'm a locavore now.’

The names of the folks in the picture are Tim and Kiyah and they, along with locavore Meghan Slining, shop at the Carrboro winter market every Saturday. Yup, these three lovely people are participating in a Locavore Challenge where they attempt to eat 80% or more local food throughout the entire year. By shopping at the Carrboro Farmers’ Market they not only are eating local, they’re eating 50 mile radius local. That’s just about as local as it gets, unless you make all your own food in your back yard. Tim has been keeping a record of their budget as the year goes on and shares his findings about what it really costs to eat all local. Check them out on the Splendid Table online and look for “Locavore Nation”. You can also read Tim’s most recent money crunching update at http://splendidtable.publicradio.org/locavore_nation/
Also, if you too are a locavore and would like to share your thoughts or a picture, please email us or let us know at the information booth at market. Enjoy Kansas food!!
